Founded in 1957 by Ludmilla Chiriaeff as a troupe of 16 dancers, LES
GRANDS BALLETS CANADIENS DE MONTRÉAL (LGBC) is today the most progressive and experimental of Canada’s big ballet troupes. It is noted for a diverse repertoire that has emphasized new works as well as traditional 19th-century story-ballets and 20th-century classics.
In the past years, LGBC has become a world-renowned creative venue for productions. Under the modern direction of Italian-born Ivan Cavallari, they devote themselves to researching and modernizing the ballet in all its forms. At the same time, the ensemble remains true to the spirit of classical technique. Thus, LGBC enthuses the audience at home and abroad worldwide.
The company has toured extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Latin and South America, and Asia. In 1984, it was the first Canadian ballet company invited to perform in China.

"The dancers of the company have demonstrated technical precision and expressiveness. The result was a composition that fascinated with its energy and liveliness."
PressMusic, Eva Mesalles, 09.2019
"The beginning of the choreography is captivating, dark in the first scene, then bright and piercing when the young girl does the duet with death. The duets, fast, chiseled, precise, are beautiful and intense."
