Theatrical dance has a long tradition in Munich, but it was only the artistic and financial independence from the opera company, which Konstanze Vernon, with the support of the Bavarian State Government, finally achieved in 1988, that made it possible for the former ballet of the Bayerische Staatsoper to develop into one of the outstanding companies in the international dance scene.
Nowadays, Igor Zelensky leads the BAYERISCHE STAATSBALLETT. He took over from Ivan Liška, who had been director for 18 years, in the season 2016/2017. Igor Zelensky maintains Munich's rich repertoire, from the romanticism like Giselle and La Sylphide to classicism like Swanlake and Sleeping Beauty to the classics of the last century. Next to this, he presents new works by Christopher Wheeldon and Wayne McGregor. The re-pertoire of the company includes masterpieces from George Balanchine to Hans van Manen as well.
